Referral & Prior Authorization Specialist — Remote (eClinicalWorks)
Maverick Medical is a solo-physician primary care practice in Bakersfield, CA. We're hiring a remote Referral & Prior Authorization Specialist to own the entire referral lifecycle — not just place referrals, but close them. This is a phone-forward role. If you like clean handoffs, persistent follow-up, and closing loops nobody else will chase, you'll do well here.
What you'll do
- Place and track all outgoing referrals in eClinicalWorks
- Obtain prior authorizations from Medicare Advantage, Medi-Cal, IPA, and commercial plans; track pending, appeal denials, and re-authorize before expiration
- Call specialist offices to confirm receipt, confirm the patient was actually scheduled, and chase the consult note back
- Scan and attach returned consult notes to the chart, then close the referral in eCW
- Call pharmacies on medication issues: rejections, PA requirements, refill problems, and prior auth submissions through CoverMyMeds
- Build and maintain our specialist roster — which offices accept each plan, current fax numbers, portal logins, scheduling turnaround, and who reliably returns consult notes. Flag specialists we should stop sending patients to
- Report weekly on open referrals, pending authorizations, and anything stuck
Requirements
- 2+ years of referrals and/or prior authorizations in a US medical practice
- Hands-on eClinicalWorks experience — tell us how long and which modules
- Working knowledge of Medicare Advantage, Medi-Cal, and IPA authorization rules
- Excellent spoken English; you will be on the phone with US offices, health plans, and pharmacies all day
- Reliable high-speed internet, quiet workspace, headset, and a private area for HIPAA compliance
- Available during Pacific Time business hours
- Willing to sign a Business Associate Agreement
First 30 days
Deliver a complete specialist roster in a shared spreadsheet, and clear the existing backlog of open referrals older than 30 days.
How to apply — required
Applications without the video will not be reviewed.
Submit a 60–90 second unlisted video (YouTube, Loom, or Google Drive link) of yourself speaking English, covering:
- Your name and where you're located
- Your referral and prior authorization experience, and your eCW experience specifically
- Walk us through this: a patient needs a cardiology referral, the plan requires prior auth, and the specialist's office hasn't responded to two faxes. What are your next steps?
Include your resume and your hourly rate expectation.
