I'm looking for a video editor to work with me on an ongoing weekly YouTube series documenting my attempt to become a stand-up comedian.
This isn't a highly polished corporate channel. The series is supposed to feel authentic, funny, slightly chaotic, and documentary-style.
Think less "YouTube influencer" and more "come along and see whether this works."
THE PROJECT
I'm starting a comedy brand called Dan Has Concerns and documenting the process of going from deciding to try stand-up comedy to writing material, attending open mics, performing, bombing, improving, and hopefully eventually becoming pretty good at it.
I'll provide the raw footage.
Your job is to find the story inside that footage.
Each week, you'll edit approximately:
• 1 behind-the-scenes YouTube episode, usually 5–10 minutes
• 2 short vertical clips from the same footage for Shorts/Reels/TikTok
If the relationship works well, this will be ongoing weekly work.
THE STYLE
I'm looking for an editor who understands:
• Comedic timing
• Storytelling
• Cutting unnecessary footage
• Knowing when an awkward pause is actually funny
• Punch-ins and reaction shots
• Tasteful captions/text
• B-roll
• Music and basic sound design
• Basic color correction
• Creating a strong opening/hook
I DON'T want every five seconds filled with sound effects, memes, crazy transitions, emojis, or giant animated captions.
Sometimes simple is funnier.
The personality and story should be the entertainment.
THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL
Storytelling.
I don't just need someone who knows Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut.
I need someone who can watch 20 minutes of footage and recognize:
"That's the funny part."
"That's the beginning of the story."
"That reaction needs to stay."
"Everything between these two moments can disappear."
If you can do that, I'm interested.
PAID AUDITION
Rather than choosing an editor entirely from a portfolio, I'm going to select a few applicants for a small paid test edit.
I'll provide approximately 20–30 minutes of raw footage.
You'll create a 60–90 second edit from it.
I'm specifically looking at:
• Story selection
• Comedic timing
• Pacing
• Editing choices
• Whether you understand the personality of the channel
The audition is paid.
Please DO NOT create a free sample using my content unless I specifically invite you to participate in the paid test.
BUDGET
Initial target budget is approximately $300/month for:
• 4 weekly BTS videos
• 8 vertical Shorts/Reels
• Basic audio/color correction
• One reasonable revision round per video
This will initially be a one-month trial.
If we work well together and the channel grows, I'd like this to become a long-term editing relationship, and I'm open to increasing the budget as the workload grows.
HOW TO APPLY
Please send me:
- A short introduction.
- Links to 2–3 videos YOU edited that best demonstrate storytelling, personality, comedy, documentary, vlog, or creator-style editing.
Don't send me 20 links. Show me your best work.
- Tell me which editing software you use.
- Tell me your typical turnaround time for a 5–10 minute YouTube video.
- Tell me whether you're comfortable also creating vertical Shorts/Reels from the long-form footage.
And finally:
Start your application with the words "I HAVE CONCERNS."
Applications that don't begin with those words will not be considered.
I'm doing this because I want someone who actually reads the project description rather than mass-applying to editing jobs.
I'm much more interested in finding the right creative partner than finding the person with the fanciest editing reel.
